LGAKs (Lines of Generation and Application of Knowledge):
1) Production of bioactive molecules: This LGAK carries out comprehensive scientific research with plant species widely used in traditional medicine in Mexico and with other organisms such as bacteria, fungi and arthropods. The investigations are carried out using a multidisciplinary experimental approach aimed at the extraction and production of new therapeutic agents and bioinsecticides.
Research teams: RT Natural Products (interDes – interdisciplinary Higher Education Division: Des Spanish initials for Dependencia de Educación Superior-), RT Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biotechnology (InterDes), RT Environmental Biochemistry, RT Entomology and Phytopathology.
2) Biotechnological treatment of residues and bioremediation of contaminated sites: This LGAK is directed to the use of biological systems for the restoration of sites contaminated with xenobiotics. In particular the use of microorganisms (fungi and bacteria), as well as enzymes, to reduce pollution by toxic compounds (petroleum hydrocarbons, organochlorines or textile dyes).

Evolutionary Biology and Conservation
1) Evolutionary Biology: It focuses on generating scientific knowledge on different facets of biological diversity, having as unifying axis to evolutionary theory. Knowledge is generated by addressing the different hierarchical levels of biodiversity, with genetic, population and community approaches.
Research teams: RT Comparative Biology, RT Evolutionary Ecology, and RT Canopy Biology.
2) Management of Natural Resources and Conservation: The objective of this line is to generate information on the biological and cultural diversity that can be used to promote its conservation. Factors that may be affecting intra-specific genetic diversity, demographic permanence of populations, and community structure are analyzed.
